Joy Malone
Photographer | Visual Storyteller | Educator
Joy is an accomplished photographer whose passion for capturing moments began in her childhood. Growing up in a family that cherished photography, she was captivated by family albums filled with generations of memories. This early fascination ignited a lifelong love for storytelling through images, inspiring her to pursue a career behind the lens.
Joy holds an MFA in Fine Art Photography from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California, and a bachelor's degree in Philosophy with a Photography minor from St. John's University in Queens, New York. It was during her time at St. John's that her natural talent for photography was recognized, setting her on a path of artistic and professional growth.
With over a decade of experience, Joy specializes in photojournalism, family and infant portraiture, fine art photography, real estate, celebrity coverage, red carpet events, and high-end marketing campaigns. Her documentary approach and skillful use of light—both natural and artificial—allow her to create evocative images that are as impactful as they are timeless. Her fine art nighttime landscapes, described as ethereal and abstract, have been acquired by private collectors in Europe and the United States.
Joy's portfolio boasts collaborations with some of the world’s most renowned publications and organizations. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, People Magazine, Vibe, and PBS Newshour, among others. She has freelanced for Getty Entertainment, Reuters, and Wine Enthusiast Magazine, and her photographs have graced the covers of The Guardian and The New York Times. Joy has also worked with Macy's, capturing their first ad campaign highlighting the Divine 9 dresses for Black sororities.
Among her career highlights, Joy is particularly proud of her photo of her daughter greeting her father through a door during the COVID-19 pandemic. Shot for Reuters, this image was recognized as a finalist in the Pictures of the Year International contest and was selected as one of Reuters’ Top Photos of 2020.
Joy's work extends beyond photography into education and community impact. As a professor at St. John's University since 2011, she has inspired countless students. She also built a darkroom for the New Rochelle Girl Scouts, teaching over 100 boys and girls the art of darkroom photography. Her commitment to her craft earned her a faculty position at the 2024 Northern Short Course in Photojournalism.
With a deep commitment to documenting the world around her, Joy approaches every assignment with gratitude and a relentless drive to create imagery that resonates across time. Her goal is to continue growing her brand, exhibiting her work in prestigious galleries and museums, and expanding her reach in the media landscape. Clients can expect professionalism, a warm demeanor, and a fast turnaround, ensuring their moments are captured beautifully and authentically.
